“Library in Custody” Campaign: Empowering Prisoners through Knowledge

In an inspiring and impactful initiative, the “Library in Custody” campaign has taken a significant step in promoting education and personal growth among prisoners. A collaboration between several key organizations, including the Nepal Youth Council (NYC) Nawalparasi Branch, Ved: Creative Institution (Sunwal), Better Chitwan (Bharatpur), Literary Society Nawalparasi, Leo Club of Ramnagar, and the Amarpokhari Progressive Youth Club, resulted in the collection of 270 books, which were handed over to the Nawalparasi District Police Office (BSW).

This donation is part of a broader effort to provide prisoners with access to literature, helping them engage in positive activities during their time in custody. The goal of the campaign is not only to enhance literacy but also to support the personal and mental growth of those who are often overlooked by society.

The Event

The handover event was chaired by Mr. Krishna Pandey, Coordinator of the Nepal Youth Council, Nawalparasi, and Founding President of Ved: Creative Institution. The event’s chief guest was Mr. Gyanendra Prasad Phuyal, Superintendent of Police at the Nawalparasi District Police Office, with special guests Deputy Superintendent of Police Resham Bohara and Dr. Shyam Prasad Nyaupane, President of the Literary Society, Nawalparasi. The program was moderated by Yaman Bhandari, President of Ved: Creative Institution.

Several individuals from partner organizations played pivotal roles in the campaign, including Sagar Karki from Better Chitwan, Himlal Neupane from Ved: Creative Institution, and Niraj Paudel, Central Member of the All Nepal National Free Student’s Union (ANNFSU).

The Benefits of the “Library in Custody” Campaign

  • Mental and Emotional Well-being: Reading helps prisoners manage stress, anxiety, and isolation, offering them an intellectual outlet and a means of self-reflection.
  • Education and Skill Development: Access to books supports continued education, enabling prisoners to enhance their literacy skills, improve language abilities, and acquire knowledge that can help them upon re-entry into society.
  • Rehabilitation: This initiative aligns with broader rehabilitative efforts by helping inmates foster positive habits and perspectives that can assist in their reintegration into society.
  • Self-Empowerment: Books have the power to transform mindsets. By offering prisoners access to educational resources, this campaign helps instill a sense of self-worth and personal growth, essential for rebuilding their lives.

Nepal Youth Council’s Role in Social Change

Since its inception, the Nepal Youth Council (NYC) has been dedicated to empowering the youth of Nepal. Through various initiatives such as leadership training, entrepreneurship programs, human rights activism, and environmental sustainability efforts, NYC has become a driving force for positive social change. This “Library in Custody” campaign is yet another testament to NYC’s commitment to social causes and youth-driven development.

By engaging youth organizations in such impactful activities, NYC helps nurture a new generation of socially conscious leaders who can advocate for change across Nepal. The organization has been a vital platform for youth empowerment, fostering skills and opportunities that shape the future of Nepali society.

Looking Ahead

The “Library in Custody” campaign is just one example of how NYC and our partner organizations continue to address the needs of underserved populations. As more prisoners gain access to these resources, the hope is that they will be inspired to make positive changes in their lives, leading to greater societal reintegration and personal empowerment.

By emphasizing the importance of education and personal development, this campaign paves the way for a brighter future, both for individuals in custody and for the country as a whole.
